What is a Blackhead?

by Suzanne Prochaska, RN, BSN

in Natural Acne Treatment

What is a Blackhead?Ever wondered what is a blackhead? In the most simple terms, a blackhead is a little black speck in your skin’s pores. Also known as comedones more technically, this type of pimple blocks the pore. It’s one symptom of acne vulgaris.

Now before you run off to scrap and press them out of your skin, please know that this is a very common, and natural acne. Your skin simply produced too much oil that then planted itself firmly in sebaceous gland duct. The longer it sits there, the darker it becomes due to the process of oxidation. Blackheads seem to enjoy the company of hair too. They often show up in a hair follicle!

In understanding “what is a blackhead” it’s easiest to compare them to another common acne pimple – white heads. Where the blackhead has an open surface, the whitehead is closed. Since it contains the same oil, but doesn’t get exposed to air, the liquid inside whiteheads remains (as the name implies) white.

Symptoms of Jock Itch

in Fungal Treatment Foam

Fungal Treatment FoamWhat exactly are the symptoms of jock itch? Well, itching is certainly among them! Known by the medical term tinea cruris, this nasty fungal infection typically appears on the upper thighs and groins of men, but women can get it too.

There’s a special type of fungus that naturally lives on our bodies, some of which consume dead skin tissue. Combine that with a moist, warm area like the groin and you have a perfect proverbial stew pot from which jock itch can grow and spread. As the term “jock itch” implies, athletes experience this frequently due to sweating without proper air flow to the skin.

That means one of the easiest ways to help yourself prevent jock itch is wearing loose clothing, particularly in humid weather. Other factors in jock itch include diabetes, immune disorders and obesity.

Diabetes and Adult Acne

in Best Treatment for Adult Acne

Diabetes & Adult AcneDid you know that diabetes and adult acne have a connection? Adult acne that appears around your tummy could be a warning sign. You might be pre-diabetic. Females have other symptoms for which to watch – facial hair and irregular periods in particular. If you add a family history of diabetes into this equation – it’s time to see a physician.

Diets high in sugar from things like pasta, cake, soda pop and fruit juices trigger an insulin reaction in your body. Insulin rises to offset the sugar. This, in turn, causes more fat to be stored in your stomach region.

If you think you might have diabetes and adult acne your first step is seeing a doctor to confirm that diagnosis. Until you can actually get to your physician you can do various things for yourself that will HELP. The simplest answer is changing your diet. Drink more water and steer clear of sweet drinks. Avoid starches and pasta. Begin looking at whole grain breads, fresh vegetables, and less fat in all your meats. If you must eat fruit, look to berries for a lower sugar level.
